I guess I feel like the brightest light I knew of just when out. [Oct. 5th, 2008|08:06 pm]
I just can't get over this. I picked up a book of Wallace's short stories (Oblivion) and read an amazing story called "Good Old Neon." The stories topic is suicide, but what made it a particularly painful read post-author-suicide is not the topic, but the clarity in which he expresses things that I feel but can never say, things that I "think" constantly, everyday, that I desperately want to be able to talk about and discuss but can't. Even after reading a story, I can't even begin to explain it. Maybe all fiction (or art?) is like this, and of course everyone is bound to find truth in different and equally valid forms and iterations of expression.

But for me, Wallace did something that no other author has ever been able to, something that maybe no other artist has ever been able to.

I guess it would make me feel better if any of you out there who read this, consider picking up some of his work. My favorite right now is Oblivion, and it includes some incredible short stories (the one mentioned above, "Oblivion," and "Incarnation of Burned Children" are all excellent). Of course, if you don't get around to it or don't feel like reading something due to some vague livejournal obligations, I completely respect that.

New icon sets, general GUI updates. [Aug. 14th, 2007|09:42 pm]
This is very nerdy, but I am pretty proud. Obviously, don't read if you don't care, because it isn't that exciting, but I bet one or two people will think it's cool.

Because I am broke and cannot update the hardware in my computer, I decided to fuck with the GUI today.

After much searching about, I downloaded two new icon sets, one for all my folders and system icons, and one for a plethora of applications (although, of course, I have plenty of applications unsupported by these icon sets, although some of them I simply used a fitting icon that wasn't meant to be paired with whichever app I assigned it to.)

They are both designed by Laurent Baumann (www.lbaumann.com), and are simply gorgeous.

I included a few things in the picture to show whats going on.

First of all, the dock is entirely different. From left to right, the applications are: finder, system prefs, activity monitor, pages (08) itunes, camino, bittorrent, soulseek (this is def. not the soulseek icon, but I liked the truck anyway), my snes emulator (hence the triforce), preview, and safari (both of which are not permanent to the dock). Past the divider is a folder and a text doc I use to write shit down and store files that are still "in rotation" (i.e. I haven't organized them, this is moslty downloads). Finally, the full trash can.

The two finder windows show some more app icons, the folder icons, and the wonderful sidebar icons. If you can tell, my games folder has a pac man icon, which I find appropriate.

Well, thats it for my nerd-rant.

Damn! [Aug. 14th, 2007|07:48 am]
10,000 RPM
150 GB

I want one, but apparently they don't quite work with my computer, something to do with the SATA interface, I'd have to buy a SATA Host Bus Adapter.

If it weren't for that, I could get this to replace my boot disk, and the 750 gb. 7500rpm WD for my secondary drive.

Livejournal is so insane (crazy). I read what my friends write about their lives like it's written by people I don't know at all. I feel like every single line on livejournal is a projection (projected "image") and has very little do with people's lives. It's pseudo personal, but explicitly public.

For example, what am I getting out of writing (typing) this? Do I expect some personal cartharsis? Or do I expect external recognition?

Posting on livejournal requires an attempt at presentation that will make what one has to say seem more meaningful. Even now I am carfully restructuring and editing what I am writing. Of course, I'll still have plenty of typos (typing mistakes), and my subtle (explicit) "jokes" will probably be seen as uninteresting contextual dissonance.

Why did I pick those words? To sound smart? Do I sound smart? No, I probably seem irrelevent and confusing, maybe pretentious at best.

Honestly, the only reason I am writing this is becuase I can. I can write whatever I fucking want, and I bet someone might read it. That's so insane to me. I am not trying to be an asshole, I just have nothing to do. It's also that weird time of morning where if you've stayed up all night (as I have) it seems futile to try to sleep, but immensly boring to try to stay up.

How do I put emoticons in here?

Emoticons are probably my favorite thing in the world.

If I type them do they show up? Or will it just appear as boring old text?

Lollocaust. [Dec. 7th, 2006|11:49 am]
"If you think HP are garbage, how can you even think about the worst printer makers in the universe? Lexmark is absolutely the lowest of the low. And Dell printers are only re-badged garbage (just roooolls off your tongue...) from Lexmark, with dell-modified very expensive cartridges. I don't want to start a war her, just confirm a general consensus that Lexmark should not even be allowed to give their junk away for free. (Dell does that for them...)"

A response to a post recommending lexmark printers that I found while searching for printer drivers. The best part has to be "how can you even think about the worst printer makers in the universe?" Hahahahaha. I like to imagine someone saying that aloud with clear disdain. It's fun.

Interesting cinema history/trivia. [Nov. 29th, 2006|05:48 pm]
"He brought a contract actor into his studio and rolled tape as the man did six brief, anguished screams in one take. These screams were then added to the Warner Brothers sound library, and over the next couple of decades they found their way into dozens of Warner Brothers films."

This is pretty interesting and the video is fun:

The world is kind of an amazing place. I am actually really happy with it right now, in general. Some things (like my japanese class) are not going very well by any stretch of the imagination, but other thing (like a certain individual who has become a serious part of my life recently) are quite inconceivably wonderful. Overall, I am really happy. I just felt like telling this to livejournalland.
